About Me

Professor Rowan Pritchard‑Jones is the National Advisor for Professional Standards - Surgical Specialities and Secondary Care for Appraisal and Revalidation Alliance.

 

He is a prominent British plastic reconstructive surgeon and a nationally recognised healthcare leader, currently serving as the Associate Dean of Professional Practice at the University of Liverpool School of Medicine.  

 

He has extensive experience of system‑level and academic medical leadership, with the appraisal of doctors, revalidation governance and clinical assurance. He has previously served as a Chief Medical Officer at both NHS Trust and System level, providing senior professional leadership across complex healthcare organisations and overseeing standards of clinical governance, workforce quality, and professional performance. 

 

Alongside his system leadership roles, Professor Pritchard‑Jones is an active Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon, specialising in skin oncology and complex surgical care. He holds Honorary Clinical Professorships at the University of Liverpool and Edge Hill University, and is a Visiting Professor at the University of Chester, combining frontline clinical insight with academic and research leadership. 

 

He brings deep expertise in Responsible Officer–level decision‑making, having worked with the governance of doctors across a wide range of career models, including portfolio clinicians, academics and senior medical leaders. His breadth of medical leadership gives him a unique perspective on proportionate, supportive, and high‑quality appraisal that is both practitioner‑centred and regulator‑aligned.

 

He has also held multiple national leadership positions within professional bodies, research networks, and Royal Colleges, contributing to the development of standards, guidance, and best practice at regional and national level.

 

Professor Pritchard‑Jones is widely recognised for his work at the intersection of clinical governance, patient safety, professional standards, and digital innovation, including award‑winning national initiatives focused on quality improvement and workforce assurance. 

 

Aligned with The Appraisal & Revalidation Alliance, he is a strong advocate for fair, robust, and developmental appraisal and revalidation, ensuring doctors are supported, credible, and confidently compliant, regardless of how or where they practise.
