BASIC BACK SEAT

The formation of the Beauty Aesthetic Special Interest Committee (BASIC), founded in the wake of the Joint Council For Cosmetic Practitioners (JCCP) decision not to include non-medics on its aesthetics register, was heralded as a major new development to help safeguard the public and set new standards in the beauty and aesthetics industry.

But its next meeting has been cancelled and its work has been put on the backburner.

BASIC Chairwoman and JCCP Trustee Caroline Larissey said it is now more important to focus on the work of the new Beauty, Aesthetics and Wellbeing All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) which is looking at the challenges faced in the industry.

She said: "The BASIC group will be focusing on supporting the Beauty, Aesthetics and Wellbeing All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG). We look forward to the APPG taking an active interest in the challenges faced by the beauty aesthetics industry and to finding workable and practical solutions which give consumers the reassurance they need that their safety and wellbeing are in safe hands, whether their treatments are provided by medical or beauty professionals”

The BASIC group was drawing-up world-first nationwide guidelines for non-medics on everything from requirements at premises to customer contracts, formal complaints procedures, and required levels of first-aid training.

Its first meeting in late January 2019 agreed unanimously to help create nationally accepted guidelines and recommendations for non-medics across the aesthetics industry.

Frustrated that the JCCP has focussed on already regulated medics and seems by many to be side-lining the ever-growing non-medical profession already treating tens of thousands of clients, the BASIC group had decided to act.

But now the formation of the APPG has meant that work needs to take a backseat.

Caroline Larissey said though that this is not the end of BASIC, it’s just the APPG will have “more kudos at the moment”.
